HEALTHSTREAM: The South Australian Parliament has passed an Act to bring uniformity to drinking water regulations

On Tuesday 17 May this year the South Australian Parliament passed The Safe Drinking Water Act (2011).

The legislation will provide a uniform regulatory framework for around 500 organisations in the state which provide drinking water to the public.

These include local councils, independent town supplies, community supplies, schools, hospitals, water carters, residential care facilities and accommodation premises.

Modifications to the Act in response to public consultation include exemption of rainwater supplies provided that members of the public are made aware of this source, exemption of parks and reserves where there of normally no expectation of a drinking water supply being provided, and integration of inspection and audit procedures with existing accreditation programs.
