The final report resulting from the Productivity Commission's inquiry into Australia’s urban water sector has been released by the Government, with the Commission identifying a range of opportunities for "efficiency gains in the structural, institutional, regulatory and other arrangements" that govern the sector.
The report looks at options to achieve efficiency gains, and identifies their economic, social and environmental impacts, and propensity to facilitate supply and demand planning and decision-making in the medium and long term.
It also proposes a work program, including implementation plans for the options, identifying practical actions that governments and local councils can undertake to implement options for reforms; priority areas where greatest efficiency gains are evident; and indicators for efficiency gains in the urban water and waste water sectors.
