The boil water order issued for the Swedish city of Ostersund officially ended on 18 February, twelve weeks after it was imposed as a result of a waterborne cryptosporidiosis outbreak.
About 12,700 people are reported to have experienced gastroenteritis during the outbreak, which was attributed to human faecal contamination of the surface water source serving the city via the illegal connection of a residential sewage outlet to the stormwater system.
In the wake of the outbreak, the Swedish National Food Agency has issued new recommendations to reduce the risk of transmission of Cryptosporidium and Giardia through drinking water supplies.
